Upgrading a PC with a new GPU can be a great way to boost its performance and unlock the full potential of games and other graphics-intensive applications. GPUs are popular because they are designed for the efficient processing of large amounts of data, making them useful for tasks such as gaming, professional graphics rendering, machine learning, and scientific simulations. Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are designed specifically for rendering graphics and generating complex images. GPUs have a large number of small cores, each of which can work on a different part of the problem imultaneously. This makes GPUs more efficient at performing simple calculations in parallel than CPUs, which are designed to execute a few complex instructions in sequence.

So what does the GPU market look like? Why do GPUs stock out so fast?

It’s not uncommon to see multiple Reddit threads mentioning “GPU restock alert” or “GPU drop on BestBuy, EBay etc”. There are whole Twitter handles dedicated to aggregating GPU drop announcements. It’s crazy how fast they sell out. With the huge demand for gaming PCs and cryptocurrency mining, this is a given. Both of those industries have taken off, which has caused a huge increase in demand for powerful GPUs. It’s tough to keep them in stock. This has been exacerbated by scalpers taking advantage of the situation and reselling GPUs for a higher price. It’s a real pain for anyone trying to upgrade their system.

A trail of GPU stock outs that plagued 2022

The Nvidia RTX 3080 and 3090 sold incredibly well in 2022. The GPUs were in high demand due to their performance and cost-effectiveness, making them difficult to find in stock. The new Nvidia RTX 4090 stocks lasted for only a few hours after its release day. Additionally, AMD Radeon RX 6800 and 6800 XT were also in high demand as they were more affordable than the Nvidia GPUs.

AMD released its latest GPUs, the AMD Radeon hd 7900 series on December 13, 2022. AMD’s Design Reference versions of the RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX were launched for direct sale on their website, but unfortunately, the stock didn’t last long. The 7900 XTX was the first to sell out, followed by the 7900 XT a few hours later. Even though there was sufficient supply, the high demand quickly lead to the evaporation of the GPU stock.

Let’s talk a bit more about AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX

AMD’s Radeon XTX GPU is packed with technologies designed to maximize performance and efficiency. RDNA 3 architecture provides exceptional performance and power efficiency, while Infinity Cache+ and Smart Memory Access are designed to boost memory and game performance. FidelityFX Super Resolution is also included, offering ultra-realistic visuals and an immersive gaming experience.

The 7900 XTX which starts at $999 went on sale and it was a frenzy. It retailed on multiple sites and when attempts were made to purchase, buyers were greeted with errors and were denied a chance to reach the checkout process. AMD’s online store put buyers lined up in a digital queue for several minutes only to be disappointed by the “Sold Out” sign on the product page. However, not everyone came up empty-handed; a few lucky and well-informed buyers managed to snag the Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs from AMD.

Recent reviews and chatter on social media platforms reveal that the AMD’s RX 7900 XTX is about 9% faster than the Nvidia’s RTX 4080 on average when it comes to 4K gaming using traditional rasterization techniques. However, it is about 17% slower than Nvidia’s RTX 4090. Despite this, these numbers are not too shabby, given the price differences between these GPUs.

GPU MSRP
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX $999
RX 7900 XT $899
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 $1,199

As you can see the AMD Radeon 7000 series undercuts the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 by $200.
